Well, I’ve left my job and am taking some time to travel the world — track my progress here. So if I’m slow to respond for the remainder of the year, this is probably the reason.

Closed by Court Order

Walking around Chinatown a few days back, I came across a shuttered storefront with a court restraining order posted on it. Being Chinatown, this isn’t too strange: stores are not infrequently shut down for selling counterfeit goods. But this is the first time I’ve seen a place shut down for prostitution. But, after thinking back to what this place looked like when it was open, I can’t say I’m too shocked. It always looked just a bit too shady to be legitimate.

The lesson: be careful of unknown massage parlors. Or, do what I do, and avoid them all entirely.

This posted sign in front of the Hamilton-Madison House—one of the local ~~projects~~ settlement houses—would have a kind of retro charm if not for the grime and fractured glass.

Back from Vacation

Phew. I’m back from my Canada / New England vacation. Now, I need to fit in some power-relaxing over the weekend before heading off again Sunday evening for a work recruiting trip.

Despite what I assume is raging popularity among my “Daily Reading” articles, I’ll be on hiatus for (at least) the next week as I travel north to visit Canada for the first time (specifically Québec, where I’m a tad concerned the only French I end up remembering from high school will be remembering the province’s accent aigu).

SVU on Oliver Street

Apparently, Law & Order: SVU is filming on my street next Monday. This flier was posted right outside the front door to my building.

Update [Aug. 17, 2009]: They did indeed come film, but unfortunately due to work I only saw them packing up on my way home. I did manage to snap a shot out my window of the Haddad’s trailers you always see in New York when someone is filming something.
