Monterey Bay Aquarium
I had a chance to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium recently. While the thick glass, strong glare, and dim lighting make photography difficult, it was possible to get a few decent shots by taking a ton (I took 200) and weeding out the majority of bad ones.
- A small jellyfish in mid-motion
- A plump penguin relaxing on the rocks
- A full-sized jellyfish gliding through the water
- A playful sea otter escaping the water to investigate
- A grumpy-looking fish gliding by

Point of clarification: The grumpy-looking fish was not gliding by, it was dead.

To quote Monty Python: he’s not dead, he’s probably just … pining for the fjords.

Nice shooting. I’m on the staff at the aquarium, and we have some photo tips on our site that you can try next time you’re down here — or visiting another aquarium where you’ll encounter similar conditions.

Thanks for the tips. Can’t agree more about the flash: there isn’t one case where turning on the flash would have helped me out. It just ends up creating huge glare against the glass.
I’d also be interested to see if using a higher ISO equivalent would help. The problem I had was that, since few of the tanks are lit, fast-moving fish often appear as blurs. You’ll notice all the “underwater” pictures above are of slow-moving fellows.
